How Academic is laid out

Academic uses a Palatino-style serif in one column, with wider side margins than most of the A4 templates here. The centred name is set in small capitals over a line of contact details, followed by your summary under the heading Research Interests and a hairline rule; work experience, education, skills, projects and awards come next, with institutions in italics and project descriptions justified like short abstracts.

Who it suits

  • Master's and PhD applications that ask for a short CV
  • Research assistant, lab and other early-career research posts
  • Researchers moving into industry who want to keep a scholarly look
  • Teaching applicants who want a formal serif page, with teaching posts listed as experience

Good to know

  • There are no dedicated publications, teaching or grants sections, so it suits a short research CV rather than a full academic one. Teaching posts go under work experience, and grants or fellowships under awards.
  • The summary is always headed Research Interests, which reads oddly outside research; Classic and Professional give a similar formal serif look without it.
  • Small capitals do not always survive text extraction cleanly, so an applicant tracking system may misread the headings. For online portals, Classic is the safer serif.
